EV Charging's Trailer Problem Finally Has a Real Answer

Public charging for electric trucks has a dirty secret: you often have to unhitch your trailer. It's a dealbreaker for anyone who uses a truck for work or recreation. A new station in Warren, Michigan, finally addresses this. It’s a joint project from EVgo and GM, located right across from the automaker's massive Global Technical Center. The chargers are fast, pushing 350 kilowatts. But the speed isn't the story. The pull-through design is the story. It’s a simple, overdue change to the physical layout that fundamentally alters the usability of an EV pickup.
The station delivers its 350 kW peak power through stalls equipped with both CCS and NACS connectors, hedging against the market's slow consolidation around Tesla's plug. For a vehicle like GM's Hummer EV with its enormous 200-plus kWh battery, that high-power delivery is the difference between a viable pit stop and an hour-long ordeal. The critical engineering, however, is in the asphalt. Instead of dead-end parking spots, the lanes allow a truck towing a boat to charge and leave without a painful unhitching dance. EVgo's official announcement confirms that overhead canopies and improved lighting are also part of the flagship spec, a direct attempt to solve for the often grim and poorly-lit experience that plagues much of today's charging infrastructure.
This station is not charity. It’s a strategic necessity for General Motors, which cannot sell a critical mass of Silverado EVs if the charging experience remains broken for its target buyers. For EVgo, the partnership provides capital and prime real estate—in this case, a Meijer grocery store lot—placing infrastructure where drivers already are. This is a direct shot at Tesla’s Supercharger network, which holds the reliability crown but whose stations are notoriously hostile to trailers. The buildout is targeted; EVgo, citing Experian vehicle-registration data, says the number of EVs operating in Michigan increased sixfold between 2021 and 2025. They are placing expensive capital exactly where the customers are.
Warren station is a prototype for the new normal. Expect pull-through designs to become table stakes for any charging hub built along an interstate within the next three years. This isn't a one-off; EVgo and GM first announced the flagship program in 2024 with plans for hundreds of similar stalls nationwide. The core challenge now shifts from the technology inside the charger to the land it sits on. Pull-through lanes require a significantly larger physical footprint, driving up real estate costs and complicating site selection. The technology works. The question now is who pays the premium for the extra square footage required to make it useful: the network, the automaker, or the driver?
